The concepts of emotional and social intelligence have always fascinated me. Daniel Goleman defines emotional intelligence as the ability to identify and decipher our emotions, to possess that inner compass that guides us, to sense the emotions of others, and to be empathetic.
One day, delving deeper into the subject and trying to understand how intelligence develops from the individual to society, I stumbled upon a crucial point: the family. Isn’t that where the transition begins?
I’m not talking about intelligence measured by an IQ or complex theories, but a simpler, more fundamental kind: the ability of a person or a group to be “happy.” What if we asked ourselves what it means to be an “intelligent family”?
The first building block of this intelligent family is the family’s ability to define itself. Having its own identity. You know, that little something that makes you feel that unique bond when you’re together. It’s your story, your values, your traditions, especially your moments together.
These moments, whether of joy, sadness, or peace, form the bonds that constitute the family.
Then there’s the ability to sense the collective emotion of the family. Being attentive to moments of happiness as well as moments of tension. Saying, “Today, we’re not doing well. Why? How can we change that?” Or, on the contrary, savoring a beautiful day together.
This sensitivity to each member’s emotion, this family radar, is a form of intelligence.
In an intelligent family, there is also communication and empathy. Are you able to listen, understand, and truly be present for each other? A family that values these moments of sharing, where everyone feels free to express their thoughts and emotions without fear, is a family that strengthens its bonds.
Finally, there’s the question of priorities. Have you ever discussed your family’s priorities? Whether it’s children’s education, money management, or the values you wish to pass on. When all members share the same priorities, it creates cohesion and strength. This consistency allows for making beneficial decisions for everyone and moving forward together.
The family is a microcosm where intelligence comes to life. Take a moment to ask yourself these questions, to explore these ideas. Because, in the end, an intelligent family is a happy family. And isn’t that the ultimate goal?
